Chronic pain / Care options

Where can Veterans find care for chronic pain?

Tell your VA primary care team how pain affects movement, sleep, work, and the activities that matter to you. Ask what pain services are available locally, including physical rehabilitation, behavioral pain care, and Whole Health. If the needed service is unavailable or access is delayed, ask whether VA Community Care is an option. VA must decide eligibility and approve routine outside care.

What should I ask my VA care team?

Bring a short list of symptoms, past treatments, medications, and what you want to do more comfortably. Ask which clinician will coordinate the plan and which local services are available. VA describes Whole Health as an approach that considers the whole person and may include medical care, movement, coaching, and complementary services; availability varies by facility. Read VA’s Whole Health pain overview.

02

Can chronic pain care happen outside VA?

Possibly. If your VA team decides Community Care criteria are met, it can refer you to an authorized in-network service. Ask for the precise discipline or treatment on the referral, then confirm the provider is accepting VA referrals. Follow the Community Care steps and keep your authorization letter. Do not start routine outside treatment on the assumption it will be paid by VA.

03

How do I keep care connected?

Ask who will receive the outside clinician’s notes and how your VA team will handle recommendations, imaging, prescriptions, and further referrals. The VeteransBenefits thread describes the burden of disconnected portals and records; the provider discussion includes differing experiences with documentation and authorization renewal. These comments suggest useful questions to ask, but they are not VA policy.

04

Could Valor be part of my plan?

Valor describes a 12-week home-based chronic pain program with guided virtual-reality activities and personalized coaching. The treating clinician should decide whether it is appropriate for a particular person. Valor’s availability, ordering route, and payment status must be confirmed for the specific setting; this page makes no coverage promise. VA clinicians can request current Valor information, and Veterans can contact Valor with a general program question.

Frequently asked questions

Does chronic pain automatically qualify me for Community Care?

No. VA reviews Community Care eligibility and the requested service for each Veteran.

What if my pain is getting worse?

Contact your health care team promptly for reassessment. Seek emergency care for urgent or dangerous symptoms.

Is Valor a substitute for my existing treatment?

No. A treating clinician should assess whether Valor might complement an individualized care plan.
